Living with the Mavic for a year
I have had the Mavic Pro for a year now, what are my feelings about it?
I have been flying the drone for just over a year now so I thought that it would be a good idea to do a "living with the drone" review. (Bonus:four behind the scenes photos Wooo)
The positives: ✔️
Flying -
The DJI Mavic Pro is just easy to fly! I have had no issues at all when flying it. Unlike the cheap knock-off drones, you don't have to constantly adjust your flying, if you want to hover on the spot just stop touching the controls it will hover by it's self using GPS and the controllers "magic".
Windy conditions are no issue at all. The controller chimes and alerts you with the display of your phone if the drone detects high winds, so you can be aware not to fly too close to objects, in my case trees!
Even in windy conditions with the odd gust at a high altitude the Mavic Pro makes use of GPS alongside a plethora of sensors to keep it in the same location and at the same time keeping the gimbal and camera focused at precisely what you wanted it to be looking at. I have flown in reasonable winds over the moors on Dartmoor where the poor drone had been tilted at a 30-degree angle just to be able to keep up with the wind. It was fluttering all over the place back and forth while keeping perfect lock on that I was photographing without the end result being effected.
Gimbal -
It may be tiny and I must admit putting the locking plastic insert back in after every flight is a pain but the gimbal is smooth as butter.
In fact the gimbal is so good when I needed to quickly shoot a video while walking I used the Mavic Pro in one hand and the controller in another.
I didn't have the propellers spinning and they were still in the locked position but I was able to activate the camera to record a walking sequence that turned out to be surprisingly awesome!
The negatives:❌
Large phone - it's a bit of a squeeze! -
I have a Samsung Note 8, its far too big to be a mobile phone anyway but I love the stylus (yes I'm a bit of a techy), it really doesn't fit in the holder to well to the extent where I have had to remove a bit of plastic which clips the cable neatly in to the side of the controller.
Gimbal lock -
Before you can even power on the drone you have to remove three covers.
The first is a rubber anti scratch cover for the hard clear plastic dome.
The second is the hard plastic dome
The final part is the gimbal lock.
The first two are easily taken off, the gimbal lock on the other hand feels like an afterthought. There is little in the way of guidance both in the manual or slots physically manufactured on the drone to where it should go.
I do feel that there is a possibility that the gimbal and camera could become damaged if you were to slip or incorrectly install it and sequentially travel with it.
DJI App-
Now normally I would suggest that you update all your software ASAP to make sure you have all the latest features and security updates but it does appear that the App released on "update day" feels a bit buggy. Just the other day the controller and App lost connection with the drone to which it "returned to home" narrowly missing a tree at my take off point due to a bit of wind.

Want to have one yourself?:
Below you can find the link to the drone on Amazon. If you purchase though Amazon I get a cut that will support Electro Flap Flap (no pressure :) )
